I’ve learned something today
- The AI Resist List (see airesistlist.org) maps resistance to centralized, extractive AI, including legal challenges, data-center protests, worker organizing, anti-surveillance campaigns, refusals of AI in schools and healthcare, data-ownership fights, sovereign language models, and low-impact computing. It also highlights community-led alternatives built around digital sovereignty, sustainability, and human agency.
- In this era of AI, decolonization strategies may take many forms, shaped by six dominant frameworks: Digital Sovereignty Laws (1), Open Source Infrastructure (2), Fair Data Compensation (3), Inclusive Tech Policy (4), Local Language AI (5), and Tech Accountability (6).
- Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the Data Labelers Association aims to give the often-invisible workers behind AI a collective voice by advocating for fair pay, safer conditions, and recognition. It also aims to support their mental health, professional development, and long-term power within the AI industry.
- The Guardian article “Meet the seven people who hold the keys to worldwide internet security” by James Ball, published on 28 February 2014, follows an ICANN key ceremony designed to protect the internet’s Domain Name System. Blending thriller-like security with office-room awkwardness, it reveals how global internet trust is maintained through smartcards, safes, backups, ritual, and a small group of international keyholders.
- The analogy between colonial treaties and modern clickwrap agreements helps explain how consent can be formally given without being meaningfully informed or freely chosen. It shows how unequal power, inaccessible language, hidden terms, and the absence of real alternatives still shape what “I agree” means today.
- The Data Workers’ Inquiry (see data-workers.org) is a community-based research project in which data workers investigate conditions in their own workplaces. It aims to turn workers’ firsthand knowledge into practical tools for organizing, resistance, and greater workplace power.
- Things may not be that bad yet, but if they ever become truly dystopian and a decentralized digital rebel alliance needs to rise against an Emperor of the Galactic Tech Empire, I know which neighborhood might light the first fire (I hope you get the movie reference):
