I’ve learned something today
- Makerspaces are open community spaces found in cities around the world where people come together to experiment, perform, repair, invent, and learn through hands-on collaboration across art, music, technology, science, and DIY culture. The movement behind them is about sharing tools and knowledge freely, encouraging creativity over consumption, and empowering people to explore ideas together.
- element14 is a global community for makers, engineers, and technology enthusiasts. People share projects, learn new skills, and experiment with electronics, robotics, design, and digital fabrication there. The community belongs to Avnet, an international electronics distribution company. element14 also runs a YouTube channel featuring hands-on builds, engineering challenges, and creative maker projects using tools like microcontrollers, circuitry, and 3D printing.
- Matrix is an open, decentralized communication protocol focused on secure messaging, collaboration, and digital independence from Big Tech platforms. It is used by organizations including the French government, the German healthcare system, and the German military. The Matrix Community Summit 2026 takes place from May 21–25, 2026 at c-base in Berlin.
- Based on its website, SoftEgg presents itself as an independent game development and technology studio focused on unusual, experimental, and creative projects. Their work appears to span video games, interactive music tools, and custom hardware concepts, alongside contract development for larger gaming companies.
- Zork is a pioneering text-based adventure game in which players explore a mysterious underground world by typing commands and solving puzzles through language and imagination. Released in the late 1970s, it became one of the most influential early computer games and helped define the genre of interactive fiction.
- For millions of years, nocturnal insects evolved using the moon and stars as stable light sources at an effectively infinite distance to orient themselves and keep track of which way was up. Artificial lights break this system: moths instinctively turn their backs toward the brightest light source, causing them to spiral, orbit, and become trapped around lamps instead of navigating normally.
- On this evening, I left the space station c-base through a secret exit hatch:
