I’ve learned something today
  • The case of European citizen and ICC judge Nicolas Guillou shows how US sanctions can cut someone off from payments, platforms, and basic digital services. It makes the latent threat posed by Europe’s lack of digital sovereignty tangible.
  • US security agencies introduced “anti-tech extremism” as a label for violent opposition to AI and technology companies. They monitor such movements because they fear AI-driven disruption could trigger unrest or attacks from parts of the population.
  • Susan Sontag’s Regarding the Pain of Others examines how images of war and suffering are used and interpreted. It explores how such images can provoke dissent, encourage violence, or produce apathy.
  • Nico Dekens’ article, The Slow Collapse of Critical Thinking in OSINT due to AI, warns that analysts are increasingly outsourcing judgment to generative AI. It argues that this dependence is eroding verification, source discipline, and the investigative skills OSINT relies on.
  • FOSS stands for Free and Open Source Software, but “free” can be read as either freedom or no cost. FLOSS adds Libre to make clear that it means software freedom, not software that is necessarily gratis. Freedom means being allowed to use, study, modify, and share the software. Gratis simply means paying nothing for it.
  • Presented at the 37th Chaos Communication Congress (37C3) in 2023, a talk examined how the online advertising industry categorizes people using personal and behavioral data. According to the speakers’ investigation, a document attributed to Xandr listed more than 650,000 audience categories and offered a rare view into practices in the global data trade.
  • The campus of the European University Viadrina made for a great festival venue:
